January Full Moon Yoga: Kâkîsimo Îsîpîsim, the “Great Prayer Moon/Old Moon”

As the new year begins, the Kâkîsimo Îsîpîsim, the “Great Prayer Moon” or “Old Moon,” rises over the deep quiet of winter. In Cree tradition, this is a time to turn inward, to listen deeply, and to reconnect with purpose, honouring reflection, humility, and the steady wisdom that comes with the cold season. This moon invites us to slow down and draw close to the teachings of the land and our inner knowing.

Astrologically, January’s full moon, often in Cancer, highlights emotional truth, intuition, and the call to return home to ourselves. It softens the armour we gather through winter, inviting us to release what feels heavy and root back into what feels real. Even in the stillness, there is clarity here, a remembering of who we are and what we choose to carry into the year ahead.

This first full moon of the year asks us to ground, breathe, and honour both vulnerability and strength. Through slow movement and mindful ritual, we attune to winter’s teachings: steadiness, rest, and the courage to dream again.

Why practice under the Full Moon?
The full moon amplifies emotion and intention, offering a sacred pause for release and renewal. Practicing yoga beneath its light helps us reflect, realign, and reconnect — with the Earth, with ourselves, and with the cycles that guide us. Even in winter’s stillness, this practice reminds us: the light within endures, and growth continues.
